Toronto Start-up Index - December (beta)
Inspired by the Seattle Start-up Index, and complementing our Vancouver Start-up Index, we have compiled a Toronto Start-up Index. The index is based on the average of Alexa and Compete rankings, two leading web traffic data sites.
The criteria for companies to appear on the list:
- Located within Metro Toronto
- Less than five years old
- Not a public company
- Is a tech company (either hardware, software, web application/service, or mobile)
To clarify the last point, we won’t be including development/design shops, consultancies, or blogs. In the future, we would be interested in compiling separate lists for these categories and lists for other cities.
We put a decent effort into collecting sites for the list, but we know there are likely some overlooked. Please leave your suggestions for other companies in the comments of this post. An updated list will be published on December 15, and regularly on the 15th of each month.

Cool list. Flattered to make it! (ProductWiki)
I just wanted to suggest a fellow GTA webiste:
http://www.madwhips.com
Alexa: 170,259
Compete: 260,550
Average: 215,405
They just relaunched in November.

Hi Greg,
Defensio and CakeMail are from Montréal. They just attented the latest StartupCamp in Toronto.

Heri beat me to the correction, but let me add that it would be cool to have a Montreal Startup Index too! In fact, Heri just put together a map of startups in Montreal that might make for a good starting point…

Another imposter - vLane is headquartered in Palo Alto.
Jevon said on Dec 12, 2007 at 5:56 am:
As you can see, not everyone at StartupCamp Toronto, or written about on Startupnorth.ca, is from Toronto.
Jevon said on Dec 12, 2007 at 6:24 am:
And I will add: Workspace is Ottawa based.

ProductWiki (despite Erik’s comment!), AideRSS, and Semacode are all in Waterloo, which has never been part of anything called “Metro Toronto.” If you change the definition to “Toronto area” then you might be okay, since that term has no precise meaning.

A for effort, but your methodology is flawed. I’m not sure what value a numbered list of companies (now a list of numbered companies would be another deal
provides, regardless.
May I suggest:
1) Use accurate data
or
2) Give the usual disclaimer that Alexa and Compete numbers are pretty much bogus, so the reader should discount them accordingly. Experienced tech folks will know to do that, but the average reader may take those numbers at face value.

Hey Will,
Our error for not stressing that this list is meant for fun only. Alexa and Compete have no serious value for investors, customers or the owners of the sites other than understanding overall trends month-to-month.
We should have stated this in the initial post like Marcelo did for his Seattle index:

Hey Guys,
Flattered that we made the list. Here is the actual data from November Groovle analytics, wondering where this really would rank? Anyone estimate?

http://www.CellClients.com is a Toronto startup company which helps Canadians exchange cell phone contracts. We would love to be added to the index.

Cakemail and Defensio aren’t even in Ontario.. and Conceptshare is in Sudbury… Waterloo ones have been pointed out already. Toronto not have enough cool stuff, why does it feel it needs to claim everything east of Winnipeg?

Great list. Quotiki is no longer in the GTA since September when it was sold to a company outside of New York City. I don’t see the RSS news hub http://www.echonium.com is on the list.
