Biggest Web Development companies in BC
The Biggest Web Development Companies in BC are highlighted in a BIVlist in this week’s Business in Vancouver newspaper. The list includes the Dev shops that everyone has heard of like Blast Radius and Habanero but also includes a bunch that are under the radar. Vision Critical’s hyper-growth is the most shocking - they’ve almost doubled their team, adding 60 staff in the past year.
- Blast Radius, Vancouver - 145 employees
- Vision Critical, Vancover - 125
- Etraffic Solutions, Victoria - 62
- Bridges Transitions, Kelowna - 55
- Habanero Consulting, Vancouver - 50
- Neverblue Media, Victoria - 50
- Elastic Path, Vancouver - 50
- Marqui, Vancouver - 44
- Graphically Speaking, Vancouver - 36
- CityXpress, Vancouver - 25
- Falcon Software, Victoria - 25
- Invoke Media, Vancouver - 22
- Donat Group, Vancouver - 17
- Domain7 Solutions, Abbotsford - 17
- Tugboat Media, Vancouver - 14
- Burnkit, Vancouver - 14
- In Vancouver Web Services, Surrey - 13
- ThinkProfits.com, Vancouver - 13
- Signals Design Group, Vancouver - 12
- IdeaLever Solutions, Vancouver - 11
- Devlin eBusiness, Vancouver - 11
- Exware Solutions, Vancouver - 9
- FileHold Systems, Vancouver - 9
- 1st on the List, Abbotsford - 8
- Bryght, Vancouver - 7
Of course, lists like these aren’t always accurate - so feel free to comment if a correction is needed. And if your Web Dev shop was missed - no matter how small, give it a shout out.
Side note - the page opposite this list is a full-page advertisement for Graphically Speaking and the headline includes “with Vancouver’s 2nd largest local web development team”. Unfortunately BIV has them ranked #9, #6 if you only include Vancouver shops.

You guys seem to be missing at least a few decent sized companies…
OpenRoad Communications

Nitobi
http://www.nitobi.com/
Both are >15 employees and in Gastown.

I have always wondered why people think that employees = big. What if you could barely pay for your employees but had lots of them? What if you were doing $10Million in revenue with 3 employees?
Graphically Speaking - maybe the keyword is “local”. I have no idea how many of the other companies employees are “local” but maybe that is what makes them number 2. Just a thought? who knows.

While it’s a lot of fun to be on this list, Vision Critical isn’t a Web Development company. We’re a software and consulting services company and build out a few simple Web portals as part of our solution (building private online research communities). If anything, we’d partner with the other companies on this list to layer in our technology into a larger Web site initiative. The headcount is correct however and we have enjoyed nice growth.

As crafters of over a hundred web sites for clients around the world, Raincity Studios is indeed a worthy addition to the list.
Specializing in Drupal-powered communities, Raincity’s client list includes Sony/BMG and Warner Brothers recording artists, SPIN Magazine, Harlequin Books, COPE and Workspace.
RCS recently opened a second office in Shanghai, China to complement the Vancouver crew and encourage open source culture. This addition brings the crew count to a fast-growing 16 members.

Just updating the record that Raincity is now 30+ now and rolling along just fine on both sides of the Pacific in the post-Bryght acquisition era.
